Two of Australia's leading writers will share the 2014 Copyright Agency Non-Fiction Writer-in-Residence at UTS.

Louis Nowra and Mandy Sayer are taking up their joint residency at UTS this month, following in the footsteps of the inaugural appointee Peter Robb in 2012 and Leah Purcell last year.

Funded by the Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund, the Non-Fiction Writer in Residence is the first of its kind in Australia and is intended to promote the study, recognition and wider appreciation of high-quality non-fiction.

Director of the UTS Centre for New Writing, Professor John Dale, said the joint appointment meant writing students and the wider community would have access to two of Australia's leading writers in both non-fiction and fiction.

"We are extremely pleased to have Louis and Mandy sharing their extensive knowledge at UTS," Professor Dale said.  "They will be attached to the Creative Writing Program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and will work with creative writing students as well as giving two public lectures during the year.

"The appointment will also support their research. During 2014, Mandy will be researching and writing a non-fiction book on the history of gypsies in Australia and Louis will be researching the life of World War One's forgotten hero, General Monash."

Louis Nowra has written six non-fiction works, including Kings Cross, a Biography, plus the memoirs The Twelfth of Never and Shooting the Moon. His screen credits include Map of The Human Heart, Cosi, Heaven's Burning, The Matchmaker, Radiance, K-19: The Widowmaker and Black and White.  He was co-writer of the documentary series First Australians and created the TV series, The Last Resort and The Straits.

Mandy Sayer published her first memoir, Dreamtime Alice, in 1998, winning the 2000 National Biography Award.  It was published in the US, the UK, and in translation in Germany and Brazil. Her second memoir, Velocity, won the 2006 South Australian Premier's Award for Non-Fiction, and The Age book of the year for Non-Fiction. In 2014 Mandy published her third memoir, The Poet's Wife, an account of her decade-long marriage to the Pulitzer-prize winning poet, Yusef Komunyakaa.
