A whole-of-process approach to Industry-led research in healthcare and life sciences will flow from a new agreement between UTS and medical technology leader GE Healthcare.
Formalising several years of collaboration, the partnership will support the entire research process – from research at the laboratory bench through to biotechnology manufacture, clinical trials, clinical imaging research and adoption by the healthcare system.
It will also facilitate greater training and education opportunities for students and the provision and management of world-leading equipment and technologies.
"This partnership will combine our research expertise in high resolution microscopy, infection and immunity, algal biology and biomedical research with increased access to industry-leading equipment and market insight," said UTS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Attila Brungs.
"But it's more than that. The complimentary work with GE Healthcare will shape the way we teach subjects within science, and potentially beyond, and lead to the development of new courses to equip graduates with the skills industry needs.
"At UTS we have an innovative approach to industry engagement – we provide research solutions to meet their needs. However, the partnerships are often much broader, incorporating teaching, professional development and commercialisation opportunities."
Mr Brian Hood, General Manager of GE Life Sciences Australia and NZ, said the partnership represented a shared vision for improving access to affordable, quality healthcare.
"It will deliver superior value to Australia by working together across the entire life sciences, healthcare, biotech and medical research continuum."
The Memorandum of Understanding will enable the UTS Faculties of Science, Engineering and IT, Business, Pharmacy and Health to engage in new ways with the international health and medical sectors.
Besides research, students and academics will benefit from proposed industry placements, equipment training and the co-development of industry relevant courses.
