The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) has climbed in to the Top 400 in the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released late last week.
UTS now ranks 384 in the 2014 ARWU, up a considerable 44 places from 428 in 2013. The ARWU ranks the Top 500 universities annually and is recognised as the precursor of global university rankings. The ARWU rankings are released by the Centre for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Professor Attila Brungs, Vice Chancellor said, “As a young university, UTS has rapidly developed a global reputation for excellence in teaching and research, a reputation that we will continue to foster.”
In world-wide rankings of ‘younger’ universities, UTS consistently ranks highly; for instance UTS is ranked 47th globally in the Times Higher Education World University ranking Top 100 Universities under 50.
In the ARWU, universities are ranked on several indicators of academic or research performance, including highly cited researchers, as well as alumni and staff winning prestigious Nobel Prizes and Field Medals.
“With innovative approaches to learning and research, and the development of our new campus to support excellence in research and teaching, UTS’s international reputation and profile will continue to grow.
“We aspire to be a world-leading university of technology. Given the investment we’ve made in our campus and our vision for research and dynamic interactive learning at UTS, we are well on the way to achieving this goal.
More than 1200 universities were ranked by ARWU in 2014, and only the top 500 are published. The 2014 ARWU also released the rankings of the top 200 universities in five broad subject fields. In the latest rankings, UTS is ranked in the Top 150 for Engineering/Technology.
ARWU also publishes the world’s top 200 universities in five ranked subjects. UTS is ranked in the Top 150 for Computer Science and in the Top 200 for Economics/Business.
“UTS is one of only a few Australian universities to consistently rise in major international rankings,” said Professor Brungs. “UTS has come far in a short time. Our efforts, our energy and our success today are fuelled by the commitment, achievements and belief of our staff, students and alumni.”
