UTS has climbed eight places to 264 in the recently released QS rankings for 2014/15.

The QS World University Rankings are published annually by British higher education information consultant Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). They are among the three most influential international university rankings, along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The breakdown of the overall QS ranking showed UTS improving in academic and employer reputation categories.

In faculty area rankings UTS had a lift of 55 places in arts and humanities to 158th, 48 places in engineering and technology to 153rd, and 37 in social sciences and management to 127th.

QS bases its ranking on an academic survey, employer survey, staff to student ratio, citations per staff ratio and the proportion of international students and international staff.

UTS Vice Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said, "UTS has rapidly developed a global reputation for excellence in teaching and research and ranking results like this one are testament to our reputation.

"Our new, world-leading campus will provide a further boost to our innovative model of learning, research efforts and industry engagement to ensure that we continue to build our reputation for excellence and quality."

UTS also performs well in other QS measures. The university is placed 21st in the world in the QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking and retains a QS five-star rating. The QS stars system represents universities based on their facilities, innovation and local engagement, as well as their teaching and research.

"Students are interested in programs that make them work-ready and build global skills through international and internship programs," said Professor Bill Purcell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor International and Advancement.

"In order to encourage this, programs such as the UTS global leadership and development program BUiLD are designed to help students look beyond just their studies in the classroom and develop their global and intercultural skills through a range of experiential programs."

Students can also participate in SOUL, UTS's social venturing and volunteering program as well as its Community Connections program, which enables international students to participate in community events and meet new Australian friends.

"UTS's consistent efforts to ascend in international university rankings, coupled with our commitment to internationalisation and the student experience, will only add to the university's reputation as a world-class university of technology," Professor Brungs said.

In summary:
  • UTS has climbed eight places to 264 in the respected QS World University Rankings for 2014/15
  • The results included lifts in faculty area rankings for arts and humanities, engineering and technology and social sciences and management
