UTS has joined a prestigious group of top 250 ranked universities in the world, according to the recently released Times Higher Education (THE) rankings 2014-2015.

The university has climbed from being in the 350 group last year and from the top 400 in 2012-2013 to be placed in ninth position in Australia, just behind the Group of Eight universities.

In "engineering and technology" UTS has moved into the top 100 for the first time, coming in at 95th position in the world.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluate universities across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

UTS has consistently improved its position in all three major global university rankings, one of only a few Australian universities to have done so.

Rankings continue to feature in the decision making of prospective students, particularly international students. However UTS also recognises and responds to the fact that students – domestic and international – are highly influenced by the experiences of their friends and family.

"Most Australian universities are aware that some students in the community, here and overseas, take university rankings into account along with other factors when considering where they may wish to study," Professor Peter Booth, UTS Provost said.

"UTS is always pleased to show progress in the rankings but we know that the positive experiences of our students, graduates and researchers, have a much greater weight when they are shared with others through word of mouth.

"While international students in particular may refer to rankings to get a sense of the quality of a university, they will still make their final assessment based on the content of a specific program, the quality of the courses and whether the courses contain the subjects and majors they are interested in.

"Factors like what else the university offers, its location and first-hand accounts will also influence a student's decision," Professor Booth said.

Over the past six years, UTS has been developing a campus that enables students to engage in creative and inspiring learning, promoting the growth of strong professional identities, future-focused graduate capabilities and global citizenship.

"We are creating learning communities and spaces for students to interact, collaborate, share ideas and move beyond the classroom," Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said.

"We are also leveraging this environment to connect students, staff, alumni, industry and the community to create sustained opportunities for collaborative learning, innovative research and enduring relationships."

Ultimately these rankings reflect UTS's innovative and ambitious nature and practical research focus. Combined with ground-breaking campus developments and the university's location in the heart of Sydney's digital creative precinct, UTS will remain a first-rate choice to students both internationally and in Australia.

"With a rapidly growing reputation for our research quality and impact across a wide range of discipline fields, we are committed to practical innovation and to the development of impact-driven research that benefits industry and the broader community, helping shape the world we live in," Professor Brungs said.

In 2014, UTS has climbed considerably in all three major international rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014/15, Academic Ranking of World Universities 2014 (Shanghai Jiao Tong) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2014.

In summary:
  • The recently released Times Higher Education rankings 2014-2015 have placed UTS in ninth position in Australia, just behind the Group of Eight universities
  • In "engineering and technology" UTS has moved into the top 100 for the first time, coming in at 95th position in the world
