UTS features amongst the world's elite institutions in 12 of the 36 subjects featured in this year's QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The standout achievement for 2015 is the "communication and media" studies area, which has risen in the rankings to be amongst the top 50 in the world, from more than 3,467 institutions evaluated. The outstanding reputation of the communications school is also reflected in the high demand for courses.
UTS Communication, ranked 44 in the world, is a unique combination of theory and practice designed to produce work ready graduates. Learning from industry experts and gaining access to high tech facilities and equipment such as; industry standard video editing suites; journalism labs; sound facilities and the famous Bon Marche studio; has meant UTS journalism and writing graduates earn the highest starting salaries of all graduates in their field in Sydney (Graduate Careers Australia, 2013).
Jim Macnamara, Professor of Public Communication and Associate Dean (Engagement and International) in the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences said he was delighted by the rating, but not surprised.
"Before I came to UTS, I headed a communication research company and a communication agency and we regularly employed UTS graduates," Professor Macnamara said. "They were known for their combination of understanding advanced communication and media theory and practical skills."
"Since joining the UTS academic staff in 2007 I have seen the process from the inside and I believe the communication and media courses at UTS exemplify the UTS model of learning integrating theory and practice, through exposing students to cutting-edge research, and through international perspectives that prepare students for a global workplace," Professor Macnamara said.
Professor Mary Spongberg, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences said, "Our Communication program is theoretically rigorous and intensely practical, in order to produce industry-ready graduates who are creative, flexible and professional. It is incredibly affirming to know that our program sits alongside the best in the world."
Other excellent performers in the QS subject rankings include; accounting and finance, art and design, business and management studies (top 100) and engineering - civil and structural, environmental sciences, economics and econometrics and Law (top 150).
The new purpose-built city campus buildings and facilities; Engineering and IT building, Dr Chau Chak Wing building, Science and Graduate School of Health Building, and Alumni Green provide new learning technologies (online and face-to-face on campus learning) and utilise state of the art equipment, ultimately improving the university's capabilities and contributing to improvements in rankings.
UTS Vice Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said, "Our vision is to be world-leading university of technology. This ambition is being matched by state-of-the-art facilities that together underpin our commitment to excellence and provide a unique, future-focused learning and research environment.
"Our rankings performance recognises UTS graduates' contributions to excellence and leadership, along with creative and entrepreneurial thinking. We are dedicated to offering new and innovative programs that ensure our graduates are immediately work ready in their careers," Professor Brungs said.
