As one of the largest NGOs working in the Indian education sector, Pratham has brought about large scale change to improve the quality of education in India. Named as one of the top 100 NGOs of the world by The Global Journal for two years in a row (2012, 2013), Pratham has been recognised by the renowned Kravis Prize and Skoll Award for its innovativeness and leadership as a social entrepreneurial organisation in the area of education and has won many national and international awards.

In 2005, The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) was initiated by Pratham to focus on issues of children’s schooling and learning in India. Selected as a finalist for 2014 OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) prize, ASER like assessments are now being implemented in eight other countries including Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Mexico with more countries on their way to implement or pilot the survey.

Dr Madhav Chavan
Dr Chavan co-founded Pratham in 1994. As its leader since its inception, he has led the organisation to expand its work over 21 states of India. He has an impressive list of awards to his credit. In 2014, he was named by the Asia Society as the 2014 Asia Game Changer in recognition of "making a transformative and positive difference for the future of Asia and the world". Dr. Chavan was also awarded the 2012 WISE Prize for Education instituted by the Qatar Foundation at the World Innovation Summit for Education, which is equated with a "Nobel Prize for work done in education".

Dr Rukmini Banerji
Dr Banerji has recently taken over as CEO of Pratham. She has led the ASER effort since its launch in 2005. ASER has been significant in defining a qualitative agenda in education and is widely acknowledged in government and policy circles, both inside and outside of India. She has considerable experience in program implementation and research. Dr Banerji will join Dr Chavan in the Q & A session.

The talk has been organised by the School of Education in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
