UTS is launching a pilot program to connect future leaders with entrepreneurs from around the world, starting with a one-day international entrepreneurs networking event on Friday 23 October.

Ideas Hub: BUiLDing Leaders and Innovators is an initiative of UTS BUiLD, a program that seeks to engage students in international leadership development beyond campus.

Participants will attend interactive seminars with entrepreneurs from the opportunity growth markets of Beijing, Mumbai, San Francisco and Sydney.

Distinguished speakers include international entrepreneurs Lisa Messenger, the founder and editor-in-chief of The Collective, Tony Broderick of Twitter and Andy Mok of Beijing Tech Hive, China's premier international startup event.

Participants will also be immersed in team-building, leadership and innovation strategies at a hand-picked selection of Sydney studios, incubators, and startups for a "mini internship" in the afternoon.

Megan Elliott, Manager Leadership & Community Connections, says UTS is offering students a rare entry into the world of international startups.

"Leadership cannot be separated from entrepreneurship in the 21st century. But what does a startup actually look like? What do they do? What does fail-forward and fail-fast look like in practice? That's what this program is about," Elliott says.

Participants will take advantage of UTS's location in Sydney's creative industries hub, visiting the Animal Logic studios, Commbank's Innovation Lab, Telstra's muru-D accelerator and ATP's Innovation studio. The program will finish in Ultimo with an open house pitch session at Fishburners.

The program is another exciting step in UTS's vision to take learning beyond campus and promote practical industry engagement.

"We'll be hearing from Tony Broderick, discovering what it actually means to join Twitter, one of the world's sexiest startups, and what leadership looks like inside Silicon Valley," Elliott says.

UTS BUiLD programs are important vehicles for UTS and its students to forge strong international ties, especially in emerging Asian markets.

Ideas Hub participants will be hearing from venture capitalists and entrepreneurs from Mumbai and Beijing, gaining deeper insights into the investment culture and leadership style in these markets.

"Australian entrepreneurs, startups, and students have to think beyond Australia. Australia is a big place, but it's a market of 23 million. So we need to partner with China, India, and Silicon Valley, so we can develop meaningful pathways into those markets and make a bigger impact. We're very interested in what we can learn from these markets in terms of leadership and approaches to entrepreneurship," Elliott says.

The Ideas Hub:BUiLDing Leaders and Innovators is being presented as part of Sydney Startup week and is currently the fastest selling event.
