UTS has reinforced its position as the top-ranked "young" Australian university and amongst the very best of the highest performing younger institutions globally with the release today of the 2015 QS Top 50 Under 50.

UTS has moved from 21st to 14th place globally in the QS World University Rankings Top 50 Under 50, a ranking of the world's top 50 universities established within the past 50 years.

In the general QS world rankings, released in September, UTS rose from 264 to 218 – a substantial lift of 46 places and a third successive improvement.

Earlier this year UTS was named number one in Australia and 21st in the world in another world ranking of universities under the age of 50, the Times Higher Education (THE) 100 Under 50. THE's World University Rankings 2015-2016, released last month, placed UTS in the 201-250 band globally – the ninth ranked Australian institution and leading young university in the country.

UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs welcomed the latest rankings as further evidence of UTS's reputation for excellence and innovation in teaching and research and the ongoing hard work and commitment of staff and students.

"To be ranked the top young university in Australia is a pleasing achievement – particularity as UTS has jumped seven places to now be ranked 14th globally," Professor Brungs said.

"It is evident that we are making good progress towards our vision of becoming a world-leading university of technology and that is due to the commitment of our staff, the quality of our students, the growing impact of our research and the hard work of our alumni and industry partners.

"As I have often said, rankings are just one measure of performance, but they are broad indicators of UTS's continued and rapid progress in teaching, research and engagement, and this ranking is consistent with the QS and THE World Ranking lists which put UTS 9th in Australia.

"Global rankings usually correlate very closely with age – the older you are the better ranked you are, and this is true for a number Australian universities. However, Australia has a number of universities which break this trend and perform well above age expectations and rank with the very best (and oldest) in the world.

"This is a great result for the Australian Technology Network of universities as all are in the top 50 and have improved on last year. In fact, these results are more evidence of the depth and breadth of quality of universities across the country. Australia is fortunate to have a world class university system.

"We know that universities are pivotal to driving innovation and shaping the graduates for the industries and jobs of the future, which is key to ongoing prosperity for all Australians. The rapid progress of such a young group of universities bodes well for the future," Professor Brungs said.

In summary:
  • UTS has moved from 21st to 14th place globally in the QS World University Rankings Top 50 Under 50, a ranking of the world's top 50 universities established within the past 50 years
  • It follows the Times Higher Education World University Rankings released last month in which UTS was the ninth ranked Australian institution and leading young university in the country
