UTS names Elizabeth Mossop new Dean of Design, Architecture and Building

Highly respected urbanist and landscape architect Professor Elizabeth Mossop has been appointed the next Dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology Sydney.

With a distinguished academic career spanning 25 years across universities in the United States and Australia, Professor Mossop has a record of visionary leadership and exceptional personal accomplishment said UTS Vice-Chancellor Attila Professor Brungs.

"We were deeply impressed by her commitment to excellence as well as cross disciplinary research and teaching, collaborating with engineering, technology, health and other disciplines," Professor Brungs said.

"Her teaching and research in urban landscape design and multi-functional infrastructure have a strong sustainability focus. This focus will strengthen UTS's significant capacity in this area."

Professor Mossop was most recently Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University, one of the highest ranked landscape architecture programs in the US. She was previously the Director of the Masters of Landscape Architecture program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

She is also a founding principal of Spackman Mossop & Michaels landscape architects based in Sydney and New Orleans. The award-winning practice specialises in the design of public landscapes, parks, urban spaces and infrastructure in Australia and the United States.

Professor Mossop said she was honoured by her appointment and looks forward to building on the strong foundations set by predecessor Professor Desley Luscombe.

"I am passionate about the power of design and its role in society and looking forward to the opportunity to work in a city with a strong design culture and sophisticated environmental values.

"I am looking forward to working with the faculty's excellent academic staff in highlighting the faculty's role in the city, and in new collaborations with industry and the professions."

Professor Mossop will take up her new post in mid-2016.
