UTS engineering student Lorna Hennessy didn't need to cast her gaze very far in deciding on the case study that has earned her the Student of the Year award from the Chartered Institution for Building Services Engineers, Australia and New Zealand (CIBSE ANZ).
The inner workings of the UTS Tower were the basis of a presentation that impressed a judging panel drawn from leading members of the consultancy and construction/manufacturing industries and educational institutions.
Now beginning the third year of her degree in mechanical and mechatronic engineering, Hennessy has been undertaking an internship with global engineering design firm AECOM.
Announcing the student prize, part of the CIBSE ANZ Young Engineer of the Year Awards, the institution said the judging panel had been impressed with Hennessy's enthusiasm and her knowledge of how various building services disciplines interact in overall building performance.
It was noted that her poster submission did not just provide detailed and informative suggestions for services upgrades to the UTS Tower, but also provided estimated cost savings and payback periods.
CIBSE ANZ annually presents student and graduate awards to provide a focus on the next generation of engineers within the field of building services and built environment.
"It is really enlightening to see young engineers getting involved with some great and innovative projects," said CIBSE ANZ Chair Ian Small. "This is not only excellent for our industry, but also proves how important it is to recognise the development and progression of young engineers."
