Award-winning broadcaster Tracey Holmes has joined the University of Technology Sydney as a Senior Lecturer in the new Graduate Diploma in Sports Media program.
Her latest endeavour sees her at the forefront of sports journalism: that is, helping to inspire and equip future professionals.
"Tracey Holmes is one of the nation's most accomplished, inspiring and brightest broadcasters. We are fortunate to have her with us," says Head of UTS Journalism Peter Fray.
"Her deep experience in sport broadcasting, both here and overseas, makes her an ideal candidate for our new postgraduate diploma in sports media."
Holmes has built an extensive career in her 28 years in the industry, alongside a reputation as a world-class presenter with an unwavering passion for sports news.
Making a name for herself as a journalistic powerhouse, she has gone on to work with some of the world’s most respected media organisations.
Back home, she is notable for becoming the first female host of Grandstand as well as advising on the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
"Sports journalism has taken a distinct turn in this highly digitised world," Holmes says.
"The next generation is already adept at juggling numerous social platforms that require an ability to get a message across quickly and succinctly as well as having an eye for powerful, story-telling images.
"To be able to bring together those skills with a journalist's natural inquisitiveness and the growing professionalism in the industry is an exciting challenge."
Launched this month, the diploma is the first postgraduate qualification in Sydney to specialise in sports media.
The transdisciplinary nature of the course delivers a unique learning experience, where students will harness the skills to expand their career opportunities in media management, sports administration, journalism and marketing.
"Well-equipped journalists covering sport today need a clear understanding of every level of the multi-billion dollar global business - from its governance model, to the growing role of sports law, anti-doping, player unions and fan-based advocacy," Homes says.
"UTS has designed this course with that in mind - again putting it at the forefront as a leader in journalistic education."
With a unique partnership with the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, this course has strong industry involvement, ideal for sports enthusiasts and athletes who have the desire to develop their interests into a career.
UTS had held its first Sports Media intake in Autumn 2017, a collaboration across the technology leading UTS School of Communication and UTS Business School. The course will also offer a Spring intake this year.
