Fresh from another spectacular graduate fashion show, UTS's Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles program has leapt 15 places in a world ranking of fashion degrees announced on Monday.
In the latest ranking by London-based industry website Business of Fashion, the UTS degree has been placed 13th in the world, up from 28th last year, and number one in Australia.
Speaking to The Australian after the announcement, course director Todd Robinson said it was "a fantastic result" given the top 10 included "some pretty big fashion-only schools."
However Robison said he thought there was something of an advantage in the UTS program not being like the big-name fashion-only schools in Europe, Britain or the US.
"We're integrated into a design school so there's a lot of cross-disciplinary engagement," he told The Australian. That meant that UTS fashion and textile design students benefited from collaborative projects with students in other design disciplines.
Other Australian courses included in the world ranking of 50 were RMIT at 17th, the Whitehouse Institute of Design at 27th and Fashion Design Studio – TAFE at 28th.
UTS FASHION 2017 featured the work of 28 final-year students in two shows on 24 October.
Building on the reputation of one of Australia's most innovative fashion courses, each session showcased bold and experimental designs for a new generation of young talent.
With its 30 year history, graduates have worked with leading international brands and designers such as Alexander McQueen, Adidas, Dion Lee, Alexander Wang, Kenzo, JW Anderson, Olivier Theyskens and Helmut Lang, while others have built their career working with established Australian fashion brands, like Oroton, Bonds, Ginger & Smart and Tigerlily.
