The nursing and midwifery programs at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have once again been ranked the leader in Australia in a prestigious global ranking of university subjects.
Nursing is among four subjects at UTS that have been ranked as being in the Top 50 in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, with a further three subjects achieving Top 100 status in their field.
As well as being first in Australia, nursing at UTS, which includes midwifery, was rated equal-sixth in the world, up from ninth place in this ranking last year.
It is also highly rated in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where it was ranked seventh in the 2018 listing.
“This remarkable result and improved standing in our global rankings position is testament to the exceptionally high-quality nursing and midwifery research and knowledge translation conducted at UTS,” said Professor Fiona Brooks, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Health.
Nurses and midwives play a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment
“Nurses and midwives play a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment across the global health system. That’s why we deliver innovative and collaborative research that aims to have transformative effects on health systems, professional practice and health policy.
“Australians continue to hold the health profession in the highest esteem and we can be rightly proud of our contribution over more than three decades.”
Also in the Top 50 in their fields were Computer Science & Engineering and the Remote Sensing subject from the Faculty of Engineering and IT. Its Telecommunication Engineering program was in the top 100.
The Hospitality and Tourism Management program at UTS Business School was again in the top 50 in the world, with Finance among the top 100.

Nursing is considered the most trusted profession in Australia, with 94% of Australians rating nurses “very high” or “high” for ethics and honesty. Nurses have topped the annual survey for 23 years running since being included for the first time in 1994.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities by academic subjects covers 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. In total, more than 4000 universities were ranked this year.
Ranking indicators include measures of research quality such as publication volume, citations, the extent of international collaboration, and the total number of staff in a subject area who have won significant awards.
