The University of Technology Sydney has broken into the top 200 of world universities in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking announced overnight.

The result now places UTS in the world’s top 200 in two leading ranking systems, THE and the QS World University Rankings.

In the latest THE ranking UTS has moved up from within a band of universities ranked 201-250 to a specified position of 196th out of 1258 institutions worldwide. The number of institutions ranked increased by more than 150 this year.

Within Australia UTS was ranked 9th out of 35 institutions, the top “young” university in that list.

“Our steady rise in international rankings over a number of years shows that UTS has been on the right track in a long program of investment in research and teaching and the kind of campus that will support innovation in both,” said UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs.

“Once again international outlook has been a strong element for UTS in the Times Higher Education assessment, which shows that the goal we set ourselves of becoming a world-leading university of technology is achievable.”

The THE ranking is based on five “pillars”, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

“As ever, our result is thanks to the hard work of our staff, the quality of our students, the impact of our alumni and the commitment of our partners,” Professor Brungs said.

In June UTS was ranked 160 in the world in the QS World University Rankings, a rise of 16 places from 2017 – and 112 places in just five years – driven by a growing research reputation, international links and employers’ regard for UTS graduates.

Again this year UTS was affirmed as Australia’s top ranked university among those less than 50 years of age by both the QS and Times Higher Education young university rankings.

Some comment from Phil Baty, THE’s Editorial Director of Global Rankings:
